Frost hardy perennial, Ht. up to 5m. Tiny yellow flowers in clusters in very early spring. Feathery dark green leaves which die back in summer reappearing in autumn. Traditional medicinal herb.

Hardy perennial, Ht. up to 90cm. Umbels of white flowers in summer followed by edible seeds. Glossy leaves divided into three broad toothed leaflets on red green stems. Culinary, the seeds can be used in soups, breads and stews.

Milk Thistle

Hardy Annual or Biennial, Ht. 60-120cm. Attractive solitary purple flower heads, surrounded by stiff curved spiny pale green bracts. Pinnately lobed oblong deep green leaves with cream variegation along the veins and sometimes also with white blotches. The seeds are a bitter digestive tonic and used in treating dyspepsia and disorders of the biliary system, also liver damage especially after poisoning.
